Chinese Checkers is a simple race game where each player tries to move all their marbles across a star-shaped board into the opposite point. The rules take two minutes to learn, but smart hopping turns a casual game into a real strategy battle.

The board and setup
The board is a six-pointed star with holes for marbles. Each of the up to six players takes one colored point of the star and fills its ten holes with their marbles. Your goal is to move every marble into the point directly across from you.
- 2 to 6 players can play.
- Each player starts in one point of the star.
- The finish is the opposite point.
How pieces move

On your turn you move one marble in one of two ways:
- Step one space to any adjacent empty hole.
- Hop over a single neighboring marble into the empty hole just beyond it.
The key rule: hops can chain. If after one hop another jump is available, you may keep hopping in the same turn, crossing the board in a single move.
| Move | Distance |
|---|---|
| Step | One hole |
| Single hop | Two holes |
| Chain of hops | Many holes at once |
Winning the game
The first player to fill the opposite point with all ten of their marbles wins. Because hops can chain, a well-placed line of marbles can leap almost the whole board in one turn.
Tip: build "ladders" — lines of marbles spaced so each can hop the next. Your own pieces become stepping stones for long chains.
Simple strategy

Beginners move marbles one step at a time; better players set up hops. Three habits win games:
- Create chains of hops instead of single steps.
- Use both your marbles and opponents’ as jump points.
- Do not leave stragglers behind — the last marble home often decides the race.
Why it is worth learning
Chinese Checkers is easy enough for children yet deep enough to reward planning. Learn to see hop chains a few moves ahead and you will beat casual players consistently — all while playing a game anyone at the table can enjoy.
